The research of Rhonda Schwindt, DNP, RN, PMHNP-BC, PMHCNS-BC, is focused on reducing the disproportionate impact of tobacco use among high-risk populations. Dr. Schwindt has received external funding to advance multidisciplinary education for Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT), to explore the use of standardized patients to assess competency in tobacco cessation counseling and to reduce smoking rates among pregnant women. She is a nationally certified psychiatric/mental health clinical nurse specialist and nurse practitioner with extensive experience teaching graduate nursing students. Dr. Schwindt has developed an innovative online module that prepares clinicians to engage in motivational interviewing, a state-of-the-art interprofessional tobacco cessation training program targeting smokers with serious mental illness and a web-based tool to assist busy clinicians with screening and brief intervention for substance use disorders.
